this is our

Privacy policy

This policy covers how your data is collected and processsed from both the Nightfall app and the nightfall.live website.

Last updated: Revision notes

Overview

The basics

Who we are

The Nightfall app and nightfall.live website are run by Stewart Adam and hosted in the United States. For privacy questions or requests, email [email protected].

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the date at the top of this page is updated and the change is summarized in the revision notes. Changes take effect when they are posted here.

If an update affects what type of data the app sends, Nightfall will ask you again for consent before sending anything new.

Minors

Nightfall is not aimed at minors under age of 18. If you think a minor's data has been sent and would like to request deletion, see Making a request.

Software

The Nightfall app

The Nightfall app can automatically share two kinds of data to help fix errors and prioritize feature development: error reports and usage statistics.

Usage statistics

A snapshot of how Nightfall is set up, used to decide what to build next.

  • App version and operating system information
  • Basic hardware information like your CPU, GPU and memory
  • Make and model of library fixtures in your patch (custom fixtures names are not recorded)
  • How many of each object type your show contains
  • Input/output transports in use, and make and model of hardware nodes
  • Your Install ID, and a random session ID that changes each time Nightfall starts
  • Approximate location (country, region, and city) estimated from your IP address. The IP address itself is not stored.

Example: usage statistics

Illustrative report contents. Fields marked OpenPanel are added by OpenPanel when the report arrives.

Error reports

Sent when something goes wrong, so bugs can be found and fixed.

  • Error with stack trace, along with warnings logged shortly before the error
  • App version and operating system information
  • Computer model and processor architecture
  • Your Install ID, and a random session ID that changes each time Nightfall starts

Consent

The first time you launch Nightfall, a notice stays on screen until you pick an option. Choosing OK turns on both usage statistics and error reports. Choosing Customize opens Settings > Privacy, where you can turn either one off.

You can change either choice at any time in Settings > Privacy. Turning error reports off also deletes any reports still waiting to be sent.

Where the data goes

Error reports go to GlitchTip, and usage statistics go to OpenPanel. See data processors for where each is stored and how long it is kept.

What we don't collect

❌ No showfile contents or custom fixture names, unless you choose to send them in a bug report

❌ No names or email addresses

❌ No full IP addresses (error reports store IP addresses are stored with last octet removed)

Update checks

You may opt in to installing app updates. Nightfall updates are checked via web request to the nightfall.live website, which forwards it to GitHub.

The request carries information necessary to process application updates, including your IP address, operating system, processor type, and your Nightfall version. It carries no Install ID or showfile data.

You can turn off update checks in Settings > Privacy.

Bug reports and diagnostics bundles

Using the Report a bug or Collect diagnostics features of the app is optional. If you use them, you can choose to include logs or your showfile.

Diagnostics bundles may contain personal information such as usernames, file paths, or object labels in addition to showfile data like audio and GDTF files. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send it.

Bug reports are filed as public issues on GitHub. Anything you include, along with your GitHub username, can be seen by anyone. Check logs and showfiles for anything you would not want to share before attaching them, or send them privately to [email protected]. What you send is used only to look into the problem you reported, and private submissions will be deleted within 30 days after use.

Deleting your data

Each Nightfall installation creates a random Install ID for your machine on startup. It is used only to group reports that come from the same Nightfall instance and is not tied to you as a person. You can reset it in Settings > Privacy.

To have your error reports and usage statistics deleted, email [email protected] with your Install ID shown in Settings > Privacy.

If you reset your Install ID, keep a note of the old one. Nothing links the old and new IDs, so data sent under the old ID can only be deleted if you include it in your request.

Website

nightfall.live website

Visits are counted to understand how the site is used, and the website's hosts keep request logs to keep it running.

Consent

This website does not ask for consent, because it sets no tracking cookies and only counts visits without identifying you, under our legitimate interests.

To have your visits left out of the statistics, turn on Do Not Track in your browser.

What is recorded

Both record general information about each visit, such as:

✅ Pages viewed

✅ Referring site

✅ Type of browser and device

✅ An approximate location estimated from your IP address

✅ Count of clicks on some links, such as downloads.

What we don't collect

❌ No tracking cookies

❌ No IP addresses stored with visit statistics

❌ Nothing at all if your browser sends a Do Not Track request

Processors

Data processors

These services process data on our behalf.

GlitchTip stores the IP address an error report comes from with its last part removed, as seen in GlitchTip's source code. Umami and OpenPanel use your IP address to estimate an approximate location, then discard it.

Legal

Lawful bases

Our lawful bases for collecting and processing personal information are:

Making a request
